Important steps before your cosmetic mole removal treatment

It’s important to rule out skin cancer before undertaking a cosmetic mole removal treatment. Dr. Tarek Shalabi holds a certificate in dermoscopy from the Australiasian College of Dermatologists and will be happy to examine your mole with a dermoscope to exclude a suspicious lesion before proceeding with treatment. Should your mole raise any suspicion, Dr. Tarek will offer a biopsy of the lesion on the same day should you wish to do this.

At Cosmetic Doctor Brisbane, our primary concern is your health and wellbeing; we highly recommend you get regular skin cancer checks with your GP or dermatologist.

What to Expect for Your Cosmetic Mole Removal?

  • During our cosmetic mole removal treatments, Dr. Tarek uses an instrument that uses radio frequency to create a current within the desired cells. This current causes a form of vaporisation.
  • Dr. Tarek uses this device to finely vaporise layers of the mole until it lies flush with the surrounding skin. The machine that we use is so precise that it creates minimal damage to the surrounding tissues, and therefore leaves minimal signs of swelling or bruising.
  • The procedure is all completed under local anaesthetic.

If you have some anxiety over what to expect on the day of your treatment, understanding the process can help alleviate your pre-procedure stress and help you feel more prepared.
Here’s a quick overview of what you can expect on the day of your cosmetic mole removal treatment.

Examination and Consent: Dr Tarek will examine your lesion to ensure that it is suitable for cosmetic mole removal. You will then be given some time to decide on your procedure and go through the consent process.

Treatment Planning: ‘Before’ pictures will then be taken, and Dr Tarek will go through these images with you and plan your treatment, talking you through the process and expected cosmetic outcomes. Dr Tarek will then confirm again that you are happy with the treatment plan, and ask if you would like to proceed with the treatment.

Anaesthetic Administration: A local anaesthetic agent is injected under your skin, using a fine needle. This local anaesthetic will mean that you are not able to feel anything during the procedure, or experience discomfort in the treatment area during the mole removal process.

Mole Removal: Dr Tarek will then remove the mole, using an advanced and safe radio frequency technology method. This method safely vaporises the mole cells in layers until the mole is completely removed and the area is in line with your surrounding skin. Mole removal treatment takes approximately 30 minutes.

Aftercare Instructions: We will then provide you with tailored aftercare instructions that are specific to the size of the mole or moles removed and their location.

Follow-Up Appointments: Our Clinic Coordinator, Emily, will follow up with you 2 weeks after your cosmetic mole removal procedure, to ensure you are happy with your cosmetic outcome. If any adjustments are required, these will be complimentary and free of charge.

Complimentary micro needling treatments: Dr Tarek also provides 3 x complimentary microneedling treatments at 6-week intervals following your treatment to help blend your new skin with your original.

  • You will have a superficial wound following your procedure. This will resemble a deep graze. You will then be given tailored post-care instructions, which may vary depending on the size and location of your lesion.
  • Dr Tarek also provides 3 x complimentary microneedling treatments at 6-week intervals following your treatment to help blend the new skin with your original skin that surrounds the treatment area.

Why Choose Cosmetic Doctor Brisbane for your Cosmetic Mole Removal?

Patient-Centred Consultation

At Cosmetic Doctor Brisbane we allocate half-hour appointments with Dr. Tarek for every cosmetic mole removal consultation. We do not believe in a “one size fits all” approach. Instead, we are dedicated to ensuring that your treatment journey is personalised and unique to you. With over a decade of experience as a doctor, together with his team, Dr. Tarek has designed a unique consultation process for cosmetic mole removal procedures which prioritises your goals, minimal scarring and safety.

Advanced Techniques

As an established skin cancer doctor, Dr. Tarek has an in-depth understanding of skin lesions, safe removal techniques and appropriate aftercare. Over the years, he has refined his techniques using his radio frequency machine to help minimise the risk of scarring and trauma. He also prioritises patient safety and comfort, by using techniques such as anatomical mapping and local anaesthetic to increase safety during every procedure.

Procedure Planning

Each procedure has different variables such as duration, downtime and expected results. When formulating your cosmetic mole removal treatment plan, Dr. Tarek will work closely with you to ensure that the plan accommodates to your lifestyle, upcoming events and priorities.

Aftercare and Follow-Ups

Your cosmetic mole removal journey does not finish at the end of your consultation. At Cosmetic Doctor Brisbane, our Clinic Coordinator, Emily, will regularly keep in touch with you to help monitor your progress, and arrange any further follow-up appointments as required.

Aftercare for Cosmetic Mole Removal

Taking care of yourself after a cosmetic mole removal procedure is just as important as the procedure itself. We advise our patients to avoid makeup, hot saunas, high-intensity exercise, and excessive alcohol for 12 hours after their procedure. It’s important to follow this advice, and any other aftercare instructions we give you before, during and after our clinic. If you have any questions at all about aftercare following your procedure, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.

We will also check in with you 2-weeks post procedure to ensure you experience the best possible cosmetic outcome and to ensure that everything is looking as it should within the treatment area.

Risks of Cosmetic Mole Removal

Possible infection

Infection is a risk with mole removal treatments. However, this is greatly reduced by using a radiofrequency technique instead of a scalpel or knife technique. The radiofrequency leaves the wound sterile, and at our clinic, we also use an antibacterial ointment on the wounds following your procedure to keep the wound soft and clean.

Potential scarring

  • Despite the technique used by Dr. Tarek carrying the lowest risk for scarring, potential scarring is still a risk factor to consider.
  • This risk of scarring is higher if you have previously had ‘keloid’ or ‘hypertrophic’ scarring.
  • Often how you have healed following previous wounds is a good indicator of how you will respond in the future.
  • Dr. Tarek also provides 3 complimentary microneedling treatments at 6-week intervals to leave the area looking more homogenous and fresh.
  • A reminder to get your mole checked for skin cancer prior

As mentioned earlier, we highly recommend getting your moles checked for potential skin cancers in a full body skin cancer check before beginning the process of cosmetic mole removal.
