Countless Australian’s have discovered the fantastic results which can be achieved with lip fillers, helping to enhance the shape and size of the lips. Whilst the procedure is quick, relatively painless and has little downtime, it is important to follow aftercare guidelines so that you can achieve the best possible results.
At Cosmetic Doctor Brisbane, we strive to deliver natural looking results. Your clinician will provide you with professional advice and aftercare guidelines following your appointment, and this will help to ensure your comfort and long-lasting results.
Why is aftercare important?
Whilst lip filler treatment is minimally invasive and only takes a few minutes, some people may experience minor swelling, bruising and tenderness post procedure. This is perfectly normal, and these symptoms will subside within the coming days. It can take up to 5 days to achieve optimal results, so it is advisable to follow aftercare guidelines during this period. In doing so, you can minimise any swelling or pain and keep your lips looking their best. It won’t be long before you’re enjoying soft, full lips you’ve always dreamed of.
Aftercare Tips
1. After the Procedure
Your lips may be swollen and tender to the touch, and you may also experience some bruising and redness. Try to avoid engaging in activities which place pressure on the lips, such as extended periods of conversation or kissing. An ice pack may be used for 10-15 minutes at a time, and this will help to reduce swelling. Over the counter pain relief medication such as Panadol may also be used.
It is also best to avoid taking a hot shower or using a sauna for at least 24 hours post procedure, as this can cause blood vessels to dilate and exacerbate swelling.
2. Avoid Certain Food and Drink
Some types of food can irritate the treated area, so it’s a good idea to avoid these for at least 24 hours post-procedure. Hot and spicy foods can be particularly bothersome, along with consumption of alcohol which is known to delay the healing process and increase the risk of swelling. It’s also best to avoid drinking through a straw, as the pressure against the lips during suction can also delay the healing process. Try to stick to soft, easy to chew foods which will not irritate the lips.
3. Moisturisation
Whilst lip fillers are remarkably effective at hydrating the lips, it’s also a good idea to use a lip moisturiser in the days following treatment. This will help to avoid any dryness or cracking, which in rare cases can lead to scarring or infection. Gentle, fragrance-free lip balms with sun protection factor (SPF) are a great choice for keeping your lips supple, healthy and protected against harmful UV rays.
4. Avoid Strenuous Exercise
Try to avoid engaging in any strenuous activities for at least 48 hours post treatment, as this can increase blood flow around the lips which may lead to swelling and discomfort. Your clinician can provide you with further information about appropriate exercises following your treatment.
5. Avoid Touching Your Lips
Try not to touch or manipulate your lips, as this may introduce bacteria into the treated area which could result in infection. If you need to touch your lips, always make sure that you have washed, sterilised and dried your hands first.
How Long Will Fillers Last?
You only need to follow aftercare guidelines for up to 5 days after your procedure. After this time, the lip filler solution will have taken full effect and you will enjoy anywhere from 6 to 8 months of beautifully soft and voluminous lips.
